Needle Through Brick - Kung Fu Documentary

This is an amazing documentary on the struggles of Chinese Martial Arts in the 21st century. It echoes many of the struggles, hardships, and experiences that YMAA has undergone for almost 30 years, and it also shows exactly why Dr. Yang chose to build the YMAA Retreat Center and begin the ambitious 10-year training program.

Filmed in Malaysia, the film contains interviews with several traditional masters as well as some insight into the decline of traditional training. It also includes some history of how Modern Wushu developed in China, and how Wushu differs from Traditional Kung Fu.

traditional values in the modern world

A beautiful film that emphasizes the difficulty of not only preserving traditonal arts, but traditional values, in this modern world. Discipline, perserverance, and patience have always been the "secrets" to acquiring great skill or knowledge.

Yet today America has become a seminar society: People want to master an art in a weekend--then "master" something else the next weekend: instant results and instant gratification. The result is superficiality--a "black belt" in a few months. The end is "flower fist and brocade kick."

At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, thank God for masters such as Dr. Yang who devote a lifetime to perfecting the arts. We are all standing on his shoulders.
